What promises to be an important documentary will be broadcast this evening at 8.00pm (Tuesday 8 October 2013) on the National Geographic Channel. Contributors to the programme include leading members from the Sherlock Holmes Society of London: Catherine Cooke, Guy Marriott, Jean Upton and Roger Johnson (we’ve Roger to thank for tipping us off).

The National Geographic Channel is accessible in the UK via Sky (526HD, 543) and Virgin (230 /231 +1/232HD).  The programme is repeated at midnight.

This preview from Mike Watkins (6 October 2013) will give you some idea of what to expect.

“The National Geographic Channel this week takes a look at how the fictional world of Sherlock Holmes helped change the way real life crimes were solved.

In How Sherlock Changed the World forensic scientists, crime historians and Sherlockian experts reveal the surprising impact Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional character had on the development of real-life crime investigations and forensic science.

A crime fighter before his time, Holmes popularised techniques, instruments and a special method of reasoning that went on to solve many crimes.”
