Vintage Sherlock on BBC Radio4 Extra

The Sherlock Holmes Season on BBC Radio4 Extra steps up a gear this Saturday (25 October) with two classic dramatisations and a documentary you may wish to make a note of.

It’s an early start at 6.00am but if that’s before your wake up call, the repeats start at 4pm later that day with a further repeat run from 4am the following morning (Sunday 26th). You can find more about the Season here and still catch last week’s starter episode of ‘A Study in Scarlet.’ The details including links to each programme are shown below.

‘The Adventure of the Speckled Band’ starring Cedric Hardwicke as Sherlock Holmes. First heard on the BBC Home Service in May 1945.

6am, repeated 4pm and (also Sunday 26th at 4am)

‘The Sound of the Baskervilles’

From April 2007, Russell Davies follows the musical clues to discover what music meant to the Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes.

6.30am, repeated 4.30pm (also Sunday 26th at 4.30am)

‘The Final Problem’

John Gielgud plays Sherlock Holmes with Ralph Richardson as Dr Watson. In the series, first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme in December 1954, Holmes brother – Mycroft – was played by Gielgud’s brother, Val. Co-produced with the American Broadcasting Company, the influence of the US producers meant the inclusion of high-ranking American actors, including Orson Welles as Professor Moriarty.

7am, repeated 5.00pm (also Sunday 26th at 5.00am)

The brand new Elementary Season, this is number 3, starts on Sky Living on Tuesday 11 November 2014 at 9pm (The US date is 30 October on CBS).
