“His career has been an extraordinary one.”

At the ceremony, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall last night (Sunday 27 May), Steven Moffat, television writer and producer of both Sherlock & Doctor Who (BBC1), was presented with the 2012 Television Special Award by, appropriately enough, Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith.

Andrew Scott has won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Moriarty.  Martin Freeman, last year’s winner in this category had also been included in the nominations, for his portrayal of John Watson.

That was as good as it got for Sherlock on the night. Once again, Benedict Cumberbatch was left sitting in his seat when it came to handing out the Leading Actor award near the end of the evening. However, deservedly Dominic West received that gong for his portrayal of Fred West in Appropriate Adult (ITV1).

And as for the U Tube Audience Award, well, what can one say about that category? For the second year running, Sherlock was squeezed out, this time by Celebrity Juice (ITV2). Did you see Benedict Cumberbatch’s face when the winner was announced?

Highlight of the evening? That must have been Rolf Harris getting his BAFTA Fellowship, and no one deserved it more.
