January 2011 News Bulletin

“A great deal of my journalistic work is done at night, and I often write until the early morning.  So it was today.”

Crow’s Nest – The View From Alex. Kane.

We’re absolutely delighted to announce that Alex Kane is going to write a regular column for this website under the title Crow’s Nest – The View from Alex. Kane.  “Book and film reviews…or, indeed anything else that pops into my head,” he tells us, adding:  “It is essentially just my views on a variety of things.”

When he’s not in the real world our Commodore is in the surreal world of  politics and commentary (also his words, not ours!).  Alex writes a weekly column in the News Letter www.newsletter.co.uk – and is frequently to be heard airing his views on local radio and TV here in Northern Ireland.  Click on Crow’s Nest on the menu above to read Alex’s first article – The Regularity of the Irregulars.

The list of stars in the National Television Awards (NTAs) for 2010 has been whittled down to four in each of the twelve categories.  Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) is pitched against Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Philip Glenister (Ashes to Ashes) and David Jason (A Touch of Frost) for Drama Performance.

Sherlock is up against Shameless, Waterloo Road and Doctor Who for Drama.  If you voted back in round one, this will be included in the final countdown, but if you haven’t done the necessary then proceed with due haste by voting online at www.nationaltvawards.com.  You can also vote by phone on 0901 888 2011 (charges apply for phone voting).

The winners will be revealed at a ‘spectacular’ ceremony at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday 26 January 2011 which will be screened live on ITV1.

Sherlock Sky Bound.

Actually, it’s past tense now as we should have posted this item last week although in mitigation we did notify our members by email.  Warner Bros. Sherlock Holmes (2009) had its UK network premiere on Sky Premiere on Friday 7 January 2011 (repeated twice daily up to and including Thursday 13 January).

Sky Movies magazine for January/February 2011 (only available to Sky subscribers) has a major feature.  Try this for tasters – http://movies.sky.com/behind-the-scenes-with-sherlock-holmes.
